Javanese’s sayur lodeh (vegetables stewed in coconut cream) is a popular dish amongst Indonesians and it usually gets a thumbs-up for its rich taste. But recently a warung customer in East Nusa Tenggara was horrified to find a literal human thumb in his plate of the traditional dish.

Local news outlets reported that two residents of Manleten Village in Belu, East Nusa Tenggara, allegedly found part of a human thumb (complete with the nail sticking out) in a plate of sayur lodeh that they ordered from a local warung (small restaurant) recently.

A picture of the alleged thumb-added sayur lodeh was circulated within the local community.

One of the two customers, Petrus Watu, 30, filed a report to the East Tafiseto Police. In his statement, Petrus said that he saw the human thumb sticking out of the plate when he was about to eat a spoonful of vegetables on Dec. 9.

Belu Police Chief Yosep Krisbianto confirmed yesterday that it was, indeed, a human thumb found in the dish.

“We already asked the doctors immediately and there has been a confirmation from the doctors that it was a slice of human thumb,” he said, adding that they suspected the thumb belonged to an adult.

None of the warung staff was found to have a wound on their fingers, he added.

The police, Yosep added, are still questioning the witnesses including the warung owner. They also questioned the owner of a tofu factory who reportedly supplied the ingredients to the warung.

The mysterious thumb remains a mystery for the time being.
