You would think it would be common sense not to smoke in a hospital, but in Bali, rokok really is everywhere, even in the non-smoking zone at Sanglah Hospital, apparently.
Sanglah Hospital must have been getting frustrated with all the people smoking in the building though as police actually held a raid on the premises on Wednesday morning.
The raid managed to net a total of 16 smokers.
Most people “in trouble” claimed to not even know it was smoke-free zone. We hope there was clear signage in the waiting room, or else this kind of raid seems like an over-the-top step for the hospital to take.
“This is my first time here, so I did not know smoking is banned here,” an offender, Made Sumerta told Tribun Bali. Sumerta says he promises not to smoke again the hospital area.
And what was the big punishment? The smokers were given letters summoning them to Denpasar District Court where they would be made to pay a Rp 50,000 fine or face imprisonment for three months. Easy choice there.
