Kreneng temporary garbage dump (TPS) in Denpasar is just one of many similar sites that has been experiencing collection delays over the past weeks. Yesterday, the trash mound at Kreneng was seen spilling out onto the street, creating an eye-sore and a health hazard for local residents.

The backlog has in turn impacted the collection of household waste, leaving some Bali residents waiting long periods for their garbage to be picked up.

According to a report by Nusa Bali, the problem has emerged due to two factors; damaged heavy equipment, and congestion at (TPA) Suwung, the final processing site, in Serangan.

I Ketut Wisada, the head of Denpasar Environmental and Hygiene Agency (DLHK)—the body responsible for garbage collections—has acknowledged the issue, saying that three out of the six heavy equipment vehicles used for garbage disposal are still under repair.

In addition, he claimed that a narrower access road within the Suwung landfill, caused by construction on the eco park project, caused long queues of garbage hauling trucks.

The project was first announced in March of last year, and according to reporting by Jawa Pos, the proposed 20-hectare eco park—planted with a variety of trees—was initiated as part of a general landfill revitalization in the hopes that air pollution could be improved.

Meanwhile, the DLHK officers must persevere.

“We have been overwhelmed, but we are still continuing bit by bit. We hope the public can understand and be patient with this situation as we continue to work in the field,” said Wisada, as quoted in Nusa Bali.
