Susi just relocated 450 spawning crabs to Bali

Concerned about Bali’s declining crab population, Indonesia’s kicking Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti just had a load of crabs released in Tuban waters.

The minister relocated 450 spawning crabs with sizes up to 800 grams per head in the mangrove forest area of Wanasari, Tuban, reports Kompas.

The crabs were reportedly caught form Jakarta and Balikpapan (Indonesian crab heaven) and then transferred to the Fish Quarantine Center of Quality Control and Safety of the Denpasar fishery (BKIPM).

“It is expected that the Wanasari area communities will benefit as well for sustainability purposes, not to exploit the female crabs,” Pudjiastuti said in a press release, as quoted by Kompas.

“Let them have the opportunity to reproduce and thrive. To preserve nature,” she said, adding that the crabs and their progeny can hopefully be enjoyed by our children and grandchildren.
