Flights between Surabaya and Denpasar were recently rerouted to avoid some smoke and ashes from the volcano Mt. Raung in East Java.
Instead of the typical Surabaya-Denpasar route that flies over Banyuwangi, East Java, Air Nav Indonesia has had flights redirected to go over the Asembagus-Situbondo district making for a longer flight time, according to Okezone.
In addition to this route modification, Air Nav Indonesia has also appealed to airlines to fly over 20,000 feet from the water’s surface in the surrounding area.
In total, 16 flights servicing the Surabaya-Denpasar route are affected: five belong to Garuda Indonesia, four are Lion Air flights, two are AirAsia, three are Citilink, one is from Kalstar and another one is from Nam Air.
When it comes to air safety in Indonesia, or just in general, we would definitely like to take the “better safe than sorry” approach, even if it is a bit more inconvenient.
