A video is going viral on Bali social media of an opportunistic helmet thief in action.

The thief gazes stoically into the CCTV camera and eases closer and closer to the helmet sitting on a scooter that he’s parked next to, before he gently lifts it off the bike’s handlebars and casually drives away.

The video is a reminder just how easy it us to literally scoot off with someone else’s helmet — which let’s face it, sucks, as the things are not cheap, especially if you have one that’s DOT certified like Ink or Kyt brand. And how big of a slap in the face is it to be left protection-less if you’ve got to drive far, especially in the rainy season, and are nonetheless vulnerable to getting pulled over and fined by the police?

Stealing and then re-selling helmets is a thing in Bali, and happens especially in larger public spaces where parking attendants are not on duty.

Posted to Instagram by Info Denpasar on Tuesday afternoon, the video has been viewed over 43,000 times since it was uploaded.

“Evil happens because of opportunity,” cautions the citizen journalism site.

The video’s location was identified as North Jl. Ahmad Yani and was recorded on Monday afternoon at 2pm, according to Info Denpasar.
