Smuggled corals intercepted in Bali

Fish quarantine officers have confiscated corals that were being illegally smuggled from Mataram, Lombok into Bali.

The corals, which are supposed to be protected, were discovered in Padang Bai by officers at approximately 8 pm yesterday.

As if corals in Indonesia didn’t have it bad enough between suffering from pollution and getting defaced by ignorant divers, we’ve also got to worry about the illegal coral trade!

The smuggled coral has since been relocated to the waters of Bali’s Serangan Island.

“We will continue to work to protect the marine ecosystem. This is a crime of the destruction of nature,” I Ngurah Rai Fish Quarantine Officer Habrin Yake told Tribun Bali on Thursday.
