Forbes magazine released its annual list of the 50 richest people in Indonesia, noting that the rich got richer by just a smidgeon this year. The group of 50 high-rollers brought up their collective wealth from USD95 billion to USD102 billion in the last year according to the report.
Topping the list is the Hartono family, the cigarette empire owners of the Djarum Group. Brothers Budi and Michael Hartono have a combined net worth of USD16.5 billion. Other than their cigarette business, the banking sector is their bread and butter.
“The brothers experienced an increase in wealth of US $1 billion, mainly because of the increase in PT Bank Central Asia’s (BCA) stock prices,” the Forbes report said. Talk about shooting up: BCA’s stock prices went up 50% this year.
Behind the mighty Djarum Group is another cigarette tycoon. Susilo Wonowidjojo, founder of PT Gudang Garam Tbk (GGRM), and his family have a reported fortune of USD8 billion.
And at third richest in Indonesia is Anthoni Salim, heading the Salim Group. Weighing in at a net worth of USD5.9 billion, Salim has his hands full with various businesses in the food industry, telecommunications, retail, property, and banking.
The only woman on the list is Kartini Muljadi (and family). Ranked at number 29 with a net worth of USD1.1 billion, Muljadi is a practicing attorney and former judge, but her big bucks come from the pharmaceutical business.
