A 21-year-old sex worker in Denpasar has filed a police complaint accusing an officer of extortion, with the Bali Police saying they are now looking into the case.

The woman, identified as MIS, was reportedly driven to do sex work due to her financial struggles amid the pandemic. Having lost her job, she recently signed up for MiChat, a messaging app that has been associated with online sex work in Indonesia.

“The victim has an economic problem and was forced to do sex work through the MiChat app,” MIS’ attorney Charlie Usfunan said on Friday.

Charlie explained that MIS was with a client on Dec. 16 in her kost (boarding house) room when the police officer, identified as RCN, allegedly banged on her door.

RCN then threatened to take her to the police station and kicked her client out, only to force MIS to have sex with him afterwards. RCN also snatched the victim’s phone and extorted her for a monthly “security fee” of IDR500,000 (US$35).

“At first he asked for the mobile phone and a monthly deposit of IDR500,000,” Charlie said.

After the incident, MIS reached out for legal assistance and subsequently filed the police report against RCN on Friday.

Dodi Rahmawan, who heads the general crimes unit at the Bali Police, said they have received the report and will proceed with an investigation.
