At least seven residential houses in the Karangasem regency of East Bali were damaged after a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the island’s coast yesterday afternoon.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the 4.8-magnitude earthquake was centered 20 kilometers northeast of Karangasem at a depth of 10 kilometers in the ocean at 5.15pm.

Four follow-up quakes reportedly struck off Karangasem and were felt in Denpasar and Badung.

“[According to] current reports there are seven houses that were damaged. No casualties,” said Karangasem Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) secretary Putu Eka Putra Tirtana Eka, adding that residents should remain calm and collected.

The official said that the agency will continue monitoring the situation, and asked residents who suffered damage to their homes to report it immediately.
