The Seminyak branch of Earth Cafe & Market, an organic vegetarian cafe chain, was destroyed by a fire, reportedly caused by an exploding stove, yesterday evening.

One of the key witnesses, cafe employee Ni Made Marsini, said she was cooking using the stove at 5pm. Marsini said the stove fire became uncontrollable and she wasn’t able to turn it off. The fire then spread from the kitchen to the cinema on the second floor. Employees initially used a fire extinguisher to douse the flame in the cinema, but by then the fire had already reached the ceiling and ended up burning down the whole building.

“We received the information at around 5:24pm. There were nine fire trucks deployed to Earth Cafe & Market, it took around one hour to extinguish the fire,” Badung Regional Disaster Management Office (BPBD Badung) head I Wayan Wirya told reporters yesterday, as quoted by Detik. The fire was extinguished by around 7pm.

The owner of the cafe, French national Liat Solomon, was overseas when the fire occurred.

Wirya said around 500 square meters of the cafe was destroyed and losses were estimated to be around IDR6 billion (US$420,000). Fortunately there were no casualties.

Earth Market & Cafe also has a branch in Ubud.
