After nine days of coming away empty-handed, authorities say they have stopped the search for two Europeans who went missing after waves pulled them out to the sea off Diamond Beach.

As previously reported, tourists Yury Chernyavskiy, a German national, and Matthias Mittringer from Austria were declared missing after being dragged to the ocean after saving another traveler by the name of Daniel Hrdliczka from drowning on Jan. 3.

Head of Bali’s Search and Rescue Agency Gede Darmada said in a statement sent to Coconuts that search attempts for both Chernyavskiy and Mittringer were hampered by extreme weather conditions in the past few weeks and high tide – but assured the authorities already maximized their efforts.

Gede said that the authorities remain in close contact with the victim’s relatives.

“Search and Rescue Operations may continue if there are signs of sightings of the victims,” he said, citing that crewmembers of boats that regularly flow through Nusa Penida waters have been briefed about the missing persons.
