A New Yorker who has been living in Bali is responsible for robbing eight convenience stores on the island, according to Kuta Police.

The 57-year-old American man is currently in Kuta Police custody. Police say he has been carrying out robberies, armed with a dagger, for the past six months in Bali.

“In a confession, the perpetrator has admitted to committing theft for the last six months,” Kuta Police Commissioner Wayan Sumara said on Tuesday, as quoted by Merdeka.

Sumara said that the American has been living in Sanur for the past four years.

“From our investigation, there are eight locations targeted by the offender and all are convenience stores. We arrested him in Seminyak,” the police commissioner stated.

When conducting his robberies, the American would wear a mask, wield a dagger, and obscure his license plate.

In addition to stealing money from the cash register, the man would also apparently snatch stuff from the shops.

From the eight shops, the American allegedly got about Rp 16 million total. He confessed he needed the money to meet his personal needs, Sumara explained.

The American is subject to Article 365 of Indonesian Criminal Code for acts of theft with violence and is facing the threat of five years in prison, Merdeka reports.

Sumara says the investigation is not yet over though.
