A Russian national, Maksim Sternik (25), was arrested by Nusa Penida Police for a brutal attack on a local parking attendant, Komang Ariyadi, at the Kelingking Beach tourist hotspot over the weekend.
The Nusa Penida Police Criminal Investigation Unit apprehended Sternik in the early hours of Sunday at a lodging facility in Batukandik Village. Sternik had been staying in Nusa Penida since June 23, with plans to check out today.
Nusa Penida Police Chief Ida Bagus Putra Sumerta said the altercation unfolded on Saturday when Sternik unleashed a series of violent blows upon Komang Ariyadi, a local parking attendant, at Kelingking Beach in Bungamekar Village, Nusa Penida District, Klungkung.
The victim, who sustained multiple injuries and was left bleeding, was struck four times on the chin.
“The immediate response from our police team was triggered by a report filed at Nusa Penida Police regarding the assault on a parking attendant at Kelingking Beach. Our investigative unit wasted no time in launching a pursuit,” said Sumerta as quoted by Detik.
Authorities were able to track down Sternik based on the rented motorcycle he was operating, donning blue shorts and bearing license plate number DK 5131 KBJ.
The motive behind the violent outburst stemmed from an incident where Komang had moved Sternik’s motorcycle, which was obstructing the path.
Under Indonesia’s Criminal Code, Sternik may face up to two years and eight months in prison for assault.
