A Russian national was arrested over marijuana possession, police in Bali said, who is believed to have obtained the illicit substance from another foreigner on the island.
The suspect, who is identified by his initials IZ, 40, was arrested near Matahari Terbit Beach in Sanur, South Denpasar on Sunday.
Police say they obtained 17 packets of marijuana in IZ’s possession. The total weight of the confiscated marijuana has not been disclosed.
“We have arrested him and we are investigating further,” South Denpasar Police Chief Commissioner Made Teja Dwi Pramana said today.
IZ has lived in Bali for three years. He reportedly obtained the marijuana from a fellow foreigner — whose identity has not been determined — and was likely going to distribute the class I narcotic on the island.
Depending on the volume of marijuana, possession of the illegal plant is punishable by up to 20 years in prison in Indonesia. Trafficking, meanwhile, carries the death penalty as the maximum punishment.
