A Russian man in his early 30s has escaped custody, police said, after he was arrested on suspicion of DUI in a motorbike crash in Uluwatu.

The 32-year-old man, identified by his initials DT, reportedly drove his Yamaha NMax (a popular ride on the island) just past midnight on Sunday on Uluwatu Road.

DT was driving south in front of the Ungasan entry of Garuda Wisnu Kencana. As he tried to overtake a car in front of him, he swerved onto the opposite lane and crashed his motorbike into another driven by Ketut Hendra Wahyuna, 29.

“The provisional conclusion is that the NMax driver was not careful and thus caused the accident,” said Denpasar Police spokesman I Ketut Sukadi in a statement made public yesterday.

“He escaped while being treated in hospital. He was drunk [during the accident],” the cop added.

DT reportedly suffered fractures on both arms as well as an injury to one of his ears. Ketut suffered cuts on one of his fingers as well as his chest. They were both admitted to the Surya Husada Nusa Dua Hospital.

A witness named Kadek Fadli supported the DUI allegation, saying DT looked inebriated when he was driving and eventually lost control of the vehicle.

In addition to the alleged DUI, police also said that DT may face penalties for driving without a license and for negligent driving on the road.
