The police are hoping for the deportation of a Russian national who was arrested earlier this month for attempting to steal a motorbike, saying that the 31-year-old man often throws tantrums in the detention center and annoys his cellmates.

The Russian has been identified by his initials GR from Moscow. Gianyar Police Chief Made Bayu Sutha Sartana said today the suspect was staying at a villa in Ubud until June 17 when he began facing financial difficulties.

Sartana explained that GR was desperate enough to jump over a fence and into a cottage in Ubud’s Singakerta Village to steal an unattended motorbike, with the key in the ignition.

GR failed to get away, however, as the exit gate was closed. A security guard caught him while he was trying to break the gate’s chain.

Police said GR did not show any remorse upon his capture. Instead, he threw tantrums throughout his arrest and his placement at the police’s detention facility.

His cellmates were said to feel inconvenienced by his erratic behavior, prompting the authorities to conduct a mental health exam.

“We already checked his psychological condition, and the result came back normal. Maybe this is all just a trick from the suspect,” said Bayu.

So far, prosecutors have not pressed charges against GR. Under Indonesian law, GR may face up to 12 years behind bars for theft, but police are hoping for another outcome.

“We hope he will be deported,” Bayu said.
