Russian arrested after allegedly treating himself to surfboard at Kuta shop

A Russian tourist has been arrested by Kuta Police after allegedly attempting to walk off with a surf board from a Kuta shop without paying.

The 22-year-old Moscow man was reportedly caught stealing the board from a Rip Curl store in Kuta Square on Nov. 7, around 7 pm.

The Russian apparently wasn’t working alone—his friend went inside the store to distract the employee on duty, asking about cameras, while the Russian grabbed a surfboard, reportedly worth Rp 9.6 million, from the display in front of the store.

“The suspect was with a friend, who went into the shop to ask about a camera, while the suspect remained outside the store to look at the surfboards on display,” Kuta Police Criminal Unit Chief Insp. Ario Seno said on Saturday, as quoted by Tribun Bali

However, staff from the store next door noticed the Russian, suspected something was up, and asked him whether he had paid for the board.

Before the Russian could get too far, security in the shopping complex was informed. Security pursued the Russian and handed him over to Kuta Police.
