Local authorities in Bali took a 64-year-old British man to Immigration yesterday, following reports that the foreigner has been loitering around Mengwi district in Badung regency after he was allegedly robbed weeks ago.
“The foreign national did not carry his identity cards. Based on his statement, he was robbed about three weeks ago. He’s been wandering around from Jimbaran […] but he never reported [the incident] to local authorities,” I Gusti Agung Ketut Suryanegara, head of the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) in Badung, said.
Suryanegara added that the foreign national claimed to live in Jimbaran previously, but that he’s been loitering for the past three weeks and asking for food from local residents. The Brit reportedly told authorities that he ran out of money and didn’t have anywhere else to go.
Satpol PP are authorized to apprehend those caught loitering under a 2016 regulation on public order issued by the Badung regent.
The man, identified by his initials MW, reportedly arrived in Indonesia on March 6. He is currently detained at Immigration as officials await emergency travel documents from the British consulate to process his case.
Suryanegara noted that his team has so far handled six cases involving foreign nationals this month, all of whom ran out of money whilst stuck in Bali amid the pandemic. He said that anyone who’s aware of any foreigner being in the same boat should file a report with local authorities or village officials, so that they can offer assistance and prevent potential felony.
