The 2017 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Bali’s Padang Padang Beach has announced that it’s on high alert.

Round 1 of the competition could potentially take place on Thursday at 9am local time, Rip Curl Indonesia wrote in a press release shared with Coconuts Bali this morning.

The way the invitational works is that a month-long waiting period is set, during which 16 competitive surfers are on call, to be at Padang Padang within 24 hours notice, if and when event directors green light the run.

That’s why the competition’s tag line is, “It’s on when it’s on.”

We’ve been waiting for nearly a month for it to be “on” for the big surfing competition, ever since the waiting period kicked off on July 10 with an opening ceremony.

The high alert for Thursday marks the second time in the event waiting period that contest directors have switched the official event status to high alert. This time, the status update is in anticipation of a mid to large swell coming in from a “pair of powerful Indian Ocean storms”.

“At this stage, wave heights from this swell at Padang Padang are predicted to be borderline size required to run the Rip Curl Cup, but the 16 invited surfers and event crew will be ready at Padang Padang Thursday morning at 8am to make an official call for a potential 9am start to Round 1,” reads Rip Curl’s statement.

But if it turns out we don’t get the swell needed for real Rip Curl Cup barrels, the competition still has hope for the weekend.

“If the Aug. 3rd swell fails to deliver the world-class spitting tubes that have become the calling card of the Rip Curl Cup, there is still hope to run over the weekend. A larger and even more promising swell is expected for Sunday, Aug. 6th.”

The opening round of the surf competition is non-eliminatory. Of the 16 surfers competing, eight are Indonesian and the other eight are international. The eight surfers with the highest combined heat scores from Rounds 1 & 2 will advance to the semifinals

Once it’s “on”, you can watch a live steam of the event on the World Surf League and Rip Curl Asia websites.
