Reports of rabies death prompts dog elimination in Jembrana, West Bali

West Bali officials have carried out a stray dog elimination in Tuwed Village, Jembrana after a local resident reportedly died of rabies, caused by a dog bite.

Unfortunately in Bali where the street dog population is large and rabies endemic, it doesn’t take much more than fear to trigger dog culling, despite repeated government and nonprofit efforts to humanely vaccinate and sterilize in place of elimination.

“We did an elimination of dogs in Banjar Berawan Tangi this morning because there were reports of people who died, positive of rabies, in Tuwed Village,” said I Ketut Wiratma, head of Jembrana Regency’s Department of Agriculture, Plantation and Livestock, as quoted by Tribun Bali
