Prosecutors in Bali yesterday demanded that Kim Anne Alloggia, an Australian woman who was arrested for alleged possession of liquid marijuana, be sentenced to one year in prison.
Speaking at the Denpasar Court, prosecutor I Gusti Lanang Suyadnyana said that Alloggia was found guilty of violating Article 127 of the 2009 Law on Narcotics,, as reported by state news agency Antara.
It’s a relatively light sentence recommendation, considering that, under Indonesia’s notoriously harsh drug laws, possession of narcotics can be punished by up to 15 years in prison.
According to the report, Alloggia had several extenuating circumstances that helped her case, including her good behavior during trial, her admission of guilt and the fact that she had never been convicted of a crime prior to this. In addition, Alloggia is reportedly a drug addict and is suffering from a severe mental disorder.
The 51-year-old was arrested in Bali in March after her American friend sent her a vial of liquid marijuana in the mail. Authorities intercepted her package, and found a vial containing yellow-colored liquid that authorities suspected contained narcotics.
Police said that Alloggia denied having ordered the vial herself, though admitted that it was sent by a person she knew. The liquid in question was then examined and confirmed to contain THC, the active compound in marijuana.
