Prosecutors demand 18 months for Indonesian man accused of running over and killing Australian woman in Benoa

An Indonesian man on trial over allegedly killing an Australian woman during a hit and run accident in Benoa, Bali could get 18 months jail time if Bali prosecutors have their way.

Prosecutors made their demands for an 18-month term (minus time already served), arguing in Denpasar District Court on Wednesday that the defendant, Indonesian man, Benafentura Nggeo, 23, had consumed alcohol before the alleged crime.

The alleged incident, where Nggeo is said to have crashed into Australian woman, Bernadette O’Connor, causing her death, was on July 31 around 1:30 am.

Nggeo showed “recklessness” by not honking or slowing down when he hit O’Connor as she was crossing the road in front of Peninsula Beach Resort in Tanjung Benoa, prosecutors previously asserted during the trial in October.

“The defendant doesn’t have driving license. It’s true that the defendant had some alcoholic drinks before the accident,” AAP quoted prosecutor Gede Wiraguna Wiradarma as saying in court on Wednesday.

As for the defense, Nggeo’s attorney Yulius Benyamin Seran did admit his client had alcohol at a friend’s party in Denpasar right before the incident and that Nggeo did not slow down. But he also argued that there was no streetlight where the accident occurred, AAP reports.

The trial is set to pick up again next week.
