Poor taste? Australian cafe serves ‘Bali 9’ burger

An Australian cafe is serving up a Bali-inspired burger dubbed the Bali Nine, right as two Australians from the Bali Nine drug trafficking group are set to be executed in Indonesia.

Poor taste? Owner and head chef Cameron Tobin of North Stradbroke Island’s Fin n Fries told the Brisbane Times, “No way.”

Tobin claims the Bali Nine burger is the cafe’s best seller and the name is all about the ingredients.

“People have a bit of a laugh, but then I explain to them the theory behind it and tell them that there are nine ingredients on the burger,” he said, as quoted by the Brisbane Times.

“And the satay sauce is a Balinese style, hence the name, the Bali Nine.”

With the looming executions, Tobin says he has gotten a fair share of questions about the Bali Nine burger’s future on the menu once Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan are executed.

“A lot of people say ‘are you going to call it the Bali Seven in a couple of weeks time?'” he says.

“Well, we will wait and see what happens because everything is on hold.”

Though he says that kind of joking around from customers is “distasteful” in his opinion.

The Bali Nine burger is nothing new and apparently is not named to capitalize on all the press the Australian pair is getting right now—the burger’s reportedly been around for almost four years.

Tobin says he didn’t even create the name, it was from “school kids” who worked at his cafe.

But is the Bali Nine burger making a ‘crack’ at the illegal drugs that the group smuggled? Tobin again says nay.

“It is my best seller, but I get lots of people ask me if there are illicit products used in the making of the burger.

“And I always say ‘No, of course not.”

Tobin wouldn’t tell the Brisbane Times all the ingredients in secret Balinese satay recipe, but he did layout all nine ingredients for the newspaper:

1. Lettuce

2. Sweet chili

3. Fried shallots

4. Bean sprouts

5. Cheese

6. Bacon

7. Chicken-deviled patty

8. Balinese satay sauce

9. Bun
