Fire engulfed two houses in Denpasar earlier today, with officials suspecting that the flames were triggered by praying incense.

Denpasar Police spokesman I Ketut Sukadi said the incident occurred at around 6am in Nyuh Gading alley on Jalan Imam Bonjol, with the fire having ravaged the belongings stored inside the two houses.

“For now it is suspected that the fire started from incense that was lit at one of the victims’ houses as they did their prayers,” Sukadi said.

There were no fatalities in the incident. One of the victims, identified as Wayan Sadi, estimated an IDR500 million (US$35,115) loss from the fire.

Ardy Ganggas, secretary at the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in Denpasar, said police will conduct an investigation, suspecting too that human error may have triggered the fire.
