Police nab phone thief ‘specialist’ who had been targeting Bali tourists

A 22-year-old who has allegedly taken a fancy to snatching people’s phones in Kuta was reportedly arrested this week.

I Nengah Kery Sumardiana, 22, apparently told Tribun Bali on Tuesday that he has recently stolen six times, mostly from foreigners in the Kuta area.

The young man, originally from Karangasem, explained the appeal, telling the newspaper how easy it is to take mobile phones and that they are also quite easy to resell.

Specifically, he says he always observes his mark first, waiting for someone to play with their cell phone while walking.

“After that, I immediately grab it and run,” he told Tribun.

South Denpasar Police Commissioner Nanang Prihasmoko said police were able to arrest the man based on information from a report made by someone with a stolen phone.
