Police in Bali’s Badung regency have declared a man from Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, identified as YRH, a suspect for allegedly abusing his pregnant girlfriend.

As reported by Bali Post, the alleged victim is two months pregnant. YRH reportedly hit her multiple times with a hose, belt and even rubber wire on different occasions, causing her to lose consciousness.

“He was driven by jealousy, but we don’t yet know what made him jealous,” said Badung Police Vice Chief, Sindar Sinaga, as quoted by Radar Bali.

YRH, however, claims that he was driven to abuse his girlfriend because she kept on getting drunk even though she was pregnant.

“I forbid her to drink, but she doesn’t listen. She goes on drinking with her friends in their boarding rooms,” YRH reportedly told local media on Tuesday.

First Police Inspector Oka Bawa, spokesman for the Badung Police, told Nusa Bali that the abuse took place on Aug. 13 and 14 at a boarding house in North Kuta where the couple was staying.

“They were shouting at each other, and the suspect couldn’t keep his anger in check. He took his belt and hit the victim three times, and then he left,” Oka said, adding that the incident happened on the evening of Aug. 13.

The day after, another incident occurred in which YRH allegedly hit his girlfriend with a rubber wire, followed with a belt and then a hose.

“The suspect hit her all over. She lost consciousness after some time,” Oka added.

Police said YRH was arrested on Aug. 14, and will be tried under Article 14 of Indonesia’s criminal code on mistreatment.
