Police in Bali’s Buleleng regency said they uncovered an alleged brothel that fronted as a hair and beauty salon in the area, after officers raided the business and caught sex workers in the act last Friday.

According to a statement issued by Buleleng Police, five people were apprehended following the raid on Dec. 6, including the salon manager, identified by her initials PDF, as well as two sex workers and their respective clients.

“[We launched an investigation] based on a report and information from the public, who suspected that [there were prostitutes] at Jasmine Hair Beauty Salon,” the statement reads.

During the raid, police said that one of the sex workers, identified by her initial S, was having sex with a male client in a room, which was preceded by a massage. The other sex worker, identified by her initial A, was also with a client in a different room.

Police said S was paid IDR800,000 (US$57.20) and A was paid IDR500,000 for sex, while both received IDR200,000 for the massages.

As reported by Bali Express, PDF said she had been running the business since August and that there would usually be one to two clients daily. She claimed that she did not plan to run a brothel at first, but kept encountering clients who asked for more from her employees.

Police said PDF was charged with violation of Article 506 of the criminal code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of one year.
