Petition urging Bali get special autonomous province status gets over 2,000 signatures

A petition recently posted to change.org pushing for greater autonomy for Bali province is gaining steam amongst netizens.

The petition was created just on Nov. 27 and as of writing time has already got 2,461 signatures of its goal of 2,500.

Created under the user name ‘Ida Bagus Andi Loka’ in Denpasar, the petition is addressed directly to President Joko Widodo.

Loka writes that Bali’s uniqueness from other provinces across the archipelago means it should be designated an autonomous province like Yogyakarta, Aceh, Jakarta, and Papua:

“Bali deserve to be a special area or a special derah as Yogyakarta, Aceh, Jakarta and Papua, as it has many strong cultural talents. This cultural talent that makes Bali as a national asset and distinguishes it from other areas. because it also has advantages in terms of culture and religion.”

We’ve yet to see Jokowi respond to this petition—perhaps it needs hundreds of thousands of signatures rather than just 2,500 to get his attention—and we’d also be interested what Bali’s governor, Made Mangku Pastika has to say about it.
