Pasar Badung wreckage supposed to be leveled out by December 2016

The deadline for Pasar Badung’s demolition is soon approaching.

The wreckage of the pasar that was once Bali’s oldest and largest traditional market, is supposed to be leveled by December 15, 2016.

The pasar shockingly burnt down on February 29, 2016 as fire completely engulfed the four-story building.

Taking down the wreckage has not been without its struggles for workers. Excavators were brought to the site on Monday afternoon, but workers stopped when encountering an antenna in the way, according to AA Yuliarta, the chairman of the committee in charge of demolishing the market.

“Earlier, the foreman called me, saying that the (excavator) could not work because there was an antenna in the way. We were worried that if we demolished the (antenna), we would be reported to the police. So we’ve sent a letter to the owner of the antenna. It hasn’t been moved yet,” Yuliarta told Tribun Bali

The December 2016 destruction deadline was set by the City of Denpasar. The city has been auctioning off scrap metal from the wreckage and has reportedly already gotten as much as Rp 670 million.
