Andrew Chan has probably been quietly quaking in anxiety while the world has been focused on his fellow Bali Nine death row prisoner Myuran Sukumaran, ever since President Joko Widodo formally rejected the latter’s bid for clemency.
An official says Australian Chan is on the list of 20 death row prisoners that are up for capital punishment in Indonesia this year, according to the Guardian.
However, while Sukumaran received a formal letter last week on the president’s letterhead rejecting his clemency bid, as far as reports go, Chan has yet to receive a similar letter himself.
While Sukumaran has gained a level of headline fame for his rehabilitation work with Kerobokan Prison’s art program, Chan has reportedly found solace in his religion and dreams of teaching hospitality classes.
Chan posted on the Facebook group “Friends of Andrew Chan” thanking his supporters for all their encouragement with his rehabilitation and he hopes he can make it to another birthday. He writes, “I am standing strong – we are standing strong.” See the rest here:
Though it doesn’t have appeared to have worked for Sukumaran, Chan could be holding out for a 2013 Indonesian Constitutional Court ruling that allows prisoners to apply for further judicial review as new evidence is presented.
Chan and Sukumaran were a part of a group of nine Australians who were convicted of attempting to smuggle 8.3 kilograms of heroin out of Bali in 2005.
