Oops: Kerobokan jail releases wrong prisoner because of name similarity

That awkward moment when you realize you let the wrong convict go free.

A narcotics convict with a nine-year sentence got out of Kerobokan on Friday before his sentence was up, due to negligence at the prison, reports Tribun Bali

The Bali office of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights is investigating Kerobokan Prison to figure out what exactly went wrong, now that the institution mistakenly released the wrong prisoner when it was time for another prisoner with a similar name to be discharged.

According to sources in the prison who do not want to be named, the narcotics prisoner got off early because his name was similar to a theft inmate who was due for release after just seven months.

Investigators want to figure out if prison officers were truly fooled by this name similarity, they were being negligent and not vigilant enough with their jobs, or they tried to pull a fast one and did it on purpose, reports say.

Prison governor Sudjonggo confirmed the narcotics convict’s escape to local media on Tuesday.

Sudjonggo and others have not identified the inmante, but have offered up the initials of CA and age, who is about 20 years old.

“This is because there are similarities in their names. It was time to free the theft prisoner, while the drug prisoner still had to undergo half a sentence,” Sudjonggo told Tribun Bali on Tuesday.

Did this jeopardize the theft convicts release date? Nope, the prisoner who was actually set for release, was also released when prison authorities realized the mistake, Sudjonggo says.

Meanwhile, Badung police are also on the case to try and hunt down the “CA” who still has more time to serve.
