Drug trafficking is still rampant even during the pandemic, an official from the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) said today, revealing that most illicit drug deals are carried out online.
“During the pandemic, [drug] trafficking no longer occurs in public places, no longer utilizes the old system, such as sticking items under the table or against trees on the side of the street,” Agung Adnyana, who heads the BNN office in Gianyar regency, said.
“Now [drug] circulation is carried out using quick courier services. [The dealer] would entrust the item somewhere, and another person would take it there,” he continued.
Authorities are reportedly using online platforms to monitor possible drug deals and also to raise awareness among the public.
Agung said his office has so far handled two drug cases this year, which is still within the agency’s budget. He explained that BNN works based on an annual budget, and that money was earmarked for the handling of two cases this year.
“But since there is still another case, we will work to [make room in the budget] for one more arrest,” Agung said.
