A 56-year-old man in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has been arrested for the alleged rape of his 28-year-old daughter, the case of which only surfaced after the victim became pregnant and eventually gave birth to twin babies.

The suspect, identified by his initials AT, first raped the victim, identified as YVT, last year in July on her 28th birthday. Police said AT had threatened to kill his own daughter if she didn’t submit to his sexual demands.

Later that same month, AT again raped YVT, which appears to have resulted in her pregnancy, according to the chief of Timor Tengah Selatan precinct’s general crimes unit, Hendrica Bahtera.

Hendrica said that AT attempted to persuade YVT to abort the pregnancy out of fear that people would find out, but the latter refused. On April 20, YVT gave birth to twin boys, but only one of them survived.

AT and YVT were then summoned for questioning by the police after authorities received a tip from their family and neighbors who had grown suspicious. Police say both AT and YVT revealed everything during questioning, which eventually led to AT’s arrest.

AT has been charged with sexual assault under Indonesia’s domestic violence law, which carries a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison.
