A steam power plant in Celukan Bawang, Buleleng, North Bali, has made a waste disposal site, allegedly without coordinating with local residents.
The distance is just about 100 meters from a residential area, according to Tribun Bali.
As you can imagine, the residents of Celukan Bawang are not thrilled with this development.
Four villages in the Celukan Bawang area joined forces and held a meeting together, where they reportedly decided to go make an unannounced visit to the waste disposal site. From there they reportedly saw that the waste spot had been dredged to from 200 meter long puddles with a depth of five meters.
In these puddles were heaps of coal and waste dust, reports Tribun.
One resident interviewed by Tribun who objects to the waste disposal site is Surayah, 65. Surayah claims to not have known who to complain to about this waste disposal site that was built last week. Concerns include that the amount of dust could really harm the health of local residents.
Muhammad Ashari, chairman of the Institute for Community Empowerment (LPM) of Celukan Bawang, told Tribun that he has invited the party in question, PT General Energy Bali (GEB) to be present at a meeting with local residents, but that hasn’t happened yet. He says he’s called the company and just gotten a dial tone and his text messages have not been responded to either.
