The north of Bali is about to get easier to access (whether we like it or not) as plans have been announced to put a floating airport up there.
It will join Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar as one of Bali’s airports, but this one will be built on a beach off Kubutambahan in Buleleng, reports the Jakarta Post.
A Canadian investor has reportedly already showed the airport master plan to Buleleng’s regent, as of Wednesday.
Bali’s governor Made Mangku Pastika says the airport will take 1,400 hectares of reclaimed water area on the beach and there will be two runways and a 125 meter bridge from the airport to the mainland.
Anticipating environmental concerns, perhaps from all the blowback with the pending reclamation of Benoa Bay, Pastika was quick to explain a solid island would not be constructed for the new airport.
“According to the master plan, part of the beach will be reclaimed but will not be converted into an island and water will continue to float under the airport. Construction will be supported by concrete piles,” he said.
Reports put this project at an estimated cost of Rp 30 trillion, while the investor will bear 80 percent of that amount.
