Nora Alexandra, an Indonesian influencer and wife of Balinese musician Jerinx, said she has received death threats following her husband’s hate speech conviction last month.
Nora says she has almost had enough and promised to go to the police if she continues to get death threats.
“If there’s one more threat, I will take it up to the authorities. Because that’s a threat to my life,” Nora said.
Nora’s husband, whose real name is I Gede Ari Astina, was found guilty of hate speech against the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) and sentenced to 14 months in prison on Nov. 19, after a trial that was seen as another complex threat of freedom in Indonesia. In addition, the case has also brought both Jerinx and Nora under national spotlight.
Following the conviction, several social media users made threats against Nora’s life in the comments sections of her posts. Nora initially planned on filing a police report in response, but she has decided not to go through with it out of pity, after learning that one of the culprits was still in college and that the person has shown remorse by doing community service. This particular person, identified as BRH, has also sent an apology video to Nora.
“I have yet to meet him, but he sent an apology and made a video where he apologized. I didn’t have the heart [to carry on with the report], especially because he brought up his parents,” Nora added.
In the video, BRH apologized and said he has no real intention of doing harm to Nora, illustrating irresponsible behavior online that could have serious consequences.
