A New Zealand national is facing at least several years behind bars or, more severely, the death penalty after he was caught with possession of cocaine, MDMA, and meth, authorities said.
The Bali chapter of the National Narcotics Agency (BNNP Bali) announced yesterday that the Kiwi, identified as MP, received a suspicious package from his friend in Canada containing the drugs on Aug. 26 in his registered mailbox at a Denpasar post office.
The post office’s sniffer dogs confirmed that the package contained illegal drugs, which was later revealed to include around 3 grams of cocaine, almost 2 grams of MDMA, and 1.7 grams of meth.
MP, who had been residing in South Kuta for six months, was arrested at a parking lot of a store in the area on Aug. 30.
The 42-year-old man, who is half-Indonesian, told the authorities that the package was his birthday present.
Meanwhile, BNPP Bali Chief Gde Sugianyar Dwi suspected that MP is part of a drug trafficking ring encompassing Canggu, Seminyak, and Pererenan. In July, authorities arrested the ring’s kingpin, PED, a 35-year-old Brazilian chef, as well as two traffickers, namely British national CHR, 29, and Mexican national JO, 39.
Under Indonesia’s anti-narcotics law, MP may face at least 4 years behind bars or even the harshest sentence – the death penalty – if proven guilty of drug possession and trafficking.
