Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forests with the Directorate of Waste Management may make it so consumers have a to pay a small fee in 2016 for plastic bags when shopping in Denpasar.
The new rules to go through would mandate that plastic bags must be bought for Rp 500-1,000, according to Tribun News. For sure that’s not so expensive, but hopefully that could at least get people to think twice about whether they want to take their stuff in plastic if they are buying things regularly.
The desire to instate these new rules was conveyed by Waste Management Directorate official Ujang Solihin Sidik during a socialization of plastic waste management in Denpasar on Wednesday.
This wouldn’t be a nation-wide policy, but would instead be an experiment across four major Indonesian cities: Bandung, Denpasar, Semarang, and Surabaya.
Sidik said participating cities were selected based on their level of commitment to the success of the regulations.
