The murderer of American citizen Paul Robb Latourell, 51, was reportedly sentenced to 12 years in prison last week in Denpasar district court and he did not take the sentence well.
When the perpetrator, Murtazam Aulawi, 18, was found guilty of premeditated murder in a hearing led by Chief Justice AA Ketut Anom Wirakanta, Aulawi went unconscious then after waking up, directly hit the window of the court room, reports the Bali Times.
However it could have been worse for Aulawi: apparently the judge’s decision was actually lighter than the prosecutor’s recommendation of 15 years in prison.
Latourell was murdered in Denpasar last February. The victim and perpetrator were reportedly acquainted from Aulawi’s friend, Marsianus Simarto, who was allegedly having sex regularly with Latourell then often rewarded some money.
Aulawi was willing to engage in sexual intercourse with Latourell as well, supposedly because of his debt and wanted IDR200,000 for it. However, Aulawi brought a knife with him when he met the victim in Denpasar, allegedly with Simarto. Soome argument broke out that resulted in Latourell getting stabbed repeatedly with the knife, reports the Bali Times.
Latourell’s death came as a shock to the LGBTQ community in Bali since as a long-time Bali resident he was known as a passionate and generous activist, reported the Jakarta Post.
