A 48-year-old man in Bali’s Karangasem regency was found dead on top of a coconut tree this afternoon, hours after he had climbed the tree on his own.

The Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in Bali said a team was deployed to evacuate the victim — identified as INS — earlier today, after the agency received a report from his wife.

INS climbed the coconut tree at around 8am today, but did not come back down even after an hour had passed. His wife, identified as NWR, then went to the authorities to ask for help.

“A rescue team climbed up using an ascending mechanical system, and then the victim was brought down by lowering him,” Basarnas Bali Chief Gede Darmada said in a statement received by Coconuts.

“At first we thought the victim merely fainted, but after he was checked by the local medical team they declared him dead.”

Basarnas said the victim didn’t fall on his own because he was perched on a sturdy frond. His cause of death has not been disclosed.

INS has since been brought to a funeral home at his family’s request.
