Fatal vigilantism in the new year in Canggu is a reminder that Indonesian street-style justice is a force to be reckoned with.
One of two alleged muggers died after succumbing to injuries brought on by a brutal street beating from an angry mob in North Kuta on Thursday night.
The alleged muggers, identified in a Merdeka report as Triana Yudi Sanjaya, 25, and Bagas, 22, were reportedly caught trying to snatch an American woman’s bag in Tibubeneng, North Kuta as they drove up to her on a Honda Scoopy motorbike. The American woman had reportedly been accompanied by her boyfriend at the time of the incident.
As the woman cried out for help, a mob reportedly descended upon the two alleged muggers, ultimately catching the pair within 15 minutes, with Bagas dying on the spot, while Sanjaya was left in critical condition.
North Kuta Criminal Police Insp. I Putu Ika Praba confirmed the violent incident to the local media.
“Both (muggers) were battered. One of them died at the scene and the other is in critical condition,” Merdeka quoted Praba as saying.
“The (surviving) suspect is still receiving medical treatment,” he added.
