The police officer who stands accused of committing statutory rape at a police station in North Maluku has been dishonorably discharged, as the National Police offered an apology to the nation.
In a statement issued yesterday, Head of the National Police’s internal affairs division (Propam), Ferdy Sambo, announced the decision, adding that the police officer, identified as Nikmal Idwar, will be severely punished.
Nikmal, who went by the initials II in previous reports, was arrested following the rape allegations against a 16-year-old girl. He is currently detained in Ternate Prison.

The National Police also offered an apology to Indonesians after the case made national headlines and drew widespread condemnation against the institution.
“The sexual assault and rape committed by Brigadier One Nikmal Idwar; a police officer in Jailolo sub-precinct to an underage victim has stained the heart of the National Police,” Ferdy said.
“The National Police conveys its apology to the people of Indonesia on behalf of the suspect’s heinous and barbaric act.”
Ferdy stressed that any police officer who commits disgraceful acts and unsettles the public will immediately be dealt with.
Nikmal has been charged with violation of the Child Protection Law and is facing a maximum of 15 years in prison, if convicted.
