Local residents protest hotel development in Canggu

About 150 people reportedly demonstrated in Canggu, on the edge of Batu Bolong Beach on Sunday morning.

They were apparently protesting the imminent arrival of the Hotel Canggu InterContinental (HCI) and asking developers that some demands be met. One of which was that road access to Pura Batu Mejan be restored and an issue with a gutter and runoff be addressed.

“The reason we are here is that if big waves hit the gutter at the beach, it will hit the temple,” protestor Wayan Winaya said, as quoted by Tribun Bali

“The existing road in front of the hotel was also shut down to us if we have a cremation ceremony,” he added.

Tribun Bali reported of separate mediation between representatives of investors of Canggu International, Senator Arya Wedakarna, and local neighborhood leadership figures for North Kuta.
