Karangasem, Bali takes cash from cigarette taxes to pay for medical equipment

Health concerns of smoking aside, Karangasem local government is thankful for the tax money that cigarettes are bringing in so it can pay for overdue medical equipment for the region’s main hospital. Nope, the irony of that is not lost on us.

Regional Health Director Ketut Suarjaya said the much needed funding for medical supplies for Karangasem Primary Hospital can be taken from the IDR149 billion worth of cigarette tax funds transferred to Bali, reports Tribun Bali

IDR10 billion of that cash was allocated to Karangasem, says Suarjaya.

At least it’s not only the richest in Indonesia who are benefiting from the country’s tobacco addiction
