Jetstar is cutting down its carry on luggage allowance and you better not get caught sneaking extra kilos, the budget airline cautions

Starting next week, you’ll have to shave off an additional three kilograms from your carry on luggage if you are riding budget airline Jetstar, according to the Daily Telegraph

The new carry-on baggage limit is reportedly shrinking from 10 kilograms down to seven kilograms.

If you think this is going to be like AirAsia and Lion Air in Indonesia where you can sneak in extra bags over weight on board, think again. Sounds like it’ll be enforced a bit more strictly since specialist “cabin baggage officers” will be weighing in your stuff. It’s a $50 fee on domestic flights and $160 on international flights if you are caught “sneaking” some extra luggage. Ouch.

Your seven kilograms includes a second smaller bag you can fit under the seat in front of you (that weight is not separate!).

But if you think this is just a pricing scheme to bring in Jetstar more money, know that the airline claims its because of passenger complaints when passengers often found the overhead luggage bin to be full.

“To address this we are reducing the amount of baggage that customers can bring on board, which will align us with other carriers in Australia and across the Asia-Pacific region,” said a Jetstar spokesperson, as quoted by the Daily Telegraph.

“This change will help speed up the boarding process, enable more flights to depart on time and ensure all customers get their fair share of overhead locker space.”

How does this compare to other airlines? Virgin has already been doing seven kilograms and Tigerair lets you bring 10, but warns that could change.
