Jembrana Police officer caught extorting motorcyclist and trucker faces firing

A Jembrana Police officer caught on video charging illegal levies at the Gilimanuk postal inspection will likely get fired.

“As the boss, I agree with this person getting fired. But the process is still under examination and waiting for the recommendation of the Inspectorate,” Head of Jembrana Municipal Police Gusti Ngurah Rai Budi told Antara Bali on Wednesday.

Though still waiting for an update from the inspectorate, Budi is confident that his officer will be dismissed since extortion simply can’t be tolerated.

“This incident has really tarnished our institution, including me, as a leader.”

According to Budi, the officer captured on video, illegally fined a motorcyclist Rp 50,000—the recording showed the officer asking for money because the driver’s KTP (identity card) had expired. The officer also received money from a trucker passing by, without even checking the driver’s identity.

But seriously, if police fired every officer who went and asked for an unauthorized Rp 50,000, we’d imagine there wouldn’t be very many traffic police officers left.
