Jembrana: Bali rice farmers struggle with drought

Entering the rice planting season, scores of hectares of rice fields in Subak Babakan, Jembrana, West Bali are threatened with failing crops.

Despite some rain in the area on Thursday night, the region’s rice paddies seem to be suffering from a serious water deficiency, observes local newspaper Tribun Bali

Neighborhood leader I Komang Wiarta told Tribun that of 103 hectares of paddy fields in Subak Babakan, already 30 are experiencing crop failures.

“We have already been planting from December 2015, but we’ve been hit by drought, like this,” he explained.

“Normally there’s already a lot of rainfall in December, but instead it’s trickling. Now we’ve suffered considerable losses as a result oft his drought,” Wiarta added.
