Japanese woman files rape report in Kuta, suspect claimed it was consensual

Police have made an arrest after a Japanese woman told police she was raped in Kuta after a night out.

The woman, identified by Merdeka as YN, reported the rape to Denpasar Police and says she just met the guy at a bar in Kuta.

The 21-year-old admitted that she had been heavily drunk—but that obviously doesn’t excuse any aggression or manipulation of her.

“Her report says she was violently raped while drunk,” an unidentified Denpasar Police officer told Merdeka on Thursday.

Police said they immediately acted on the Japanese woman’s report and arrested 22-year-old Riky Muhamad Basri, a student from Bandung after reviewing CCTV footage at the bar where the two met.

Basri initially kept claiming that the sexual acts between the two were consensual, but after further questioning, he eventually confessed to raping YN, reports said.

“Once we put together the evidence from the field, we found there had been elements of violence against the victim in the rape case. In the end, the perpetrator confessed,” Denpasar Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit Chief Reinhard Nainggolan stated.
