A 22-year-old Japanese man died after falling into a deep sea trough in Nusa Penida’s Atuh Beach yesterday. Other tourists and local residents at the scene reportedly tried to rescue the foreigner, but they unfortunately weren’t able to save him.

In a statement issued by the Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in Bali, the Japanese man is identified as Kazuki Kiyohara.

The incident took place at around 11am yesterday, when Kiyohara was seen walking along the beach and then swimming near the rocks. He was reportedly walking further towards the sea when he fell into a deep sea trough and drowned.

“A local resident and another tourist who were in the Atuh Beach area tried to help the victim, and they were able to take him to the shore, but he was already unconscious,” the statement reads, adding that an attempt to give him CPR was also carried out to no avail.

Kiyohara was then brought to the Pratama Nusa Penida Hospital, where the medical team declared him deceased. He has since been transported to the Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar.
